*CORRUPTION AS A MAJOR CAUSE OF ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IN GHANA*
The Positive Transparency and Accountability Movement-Ghana, after conducting a thorough investigation into the underlying reasons for the country’s economic crisis, identified *corruption* as a key factor driving the nation towards financial instability.
President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Alhaji Bawumia, who famously used corruption as a platform to gain power in 2016, now seem complacent in the face of this issue. The failure of the President to prosecute his appointees involved in corruption and related scandals has created an environment where others feel emboldened to continue looting state resources, enriching themselves and their political party at the expense of the nation.
The government has used various state mechanisms to suppress civil society organizations (CSOs) and other entities that aim to speak out against these corrupt practices. President Akufo-Addo, who once promised to tackle corruption using the “Anas principle,” has instead been criticized for making misleading and hollow promises.
This failure to effectively combat corruption has led to poor governance, skyrocketing inflation, unemployment, shortages of essential supplies in schools and hospitals, and deteriorating infrastructure, including a poor road network. These are just a few of the many negative impacts felt by Ghanaians.
It is time for Ghanaians to unite and demand change to restore the country to its economic fortunes. As citizens, we must be prepared to continue the fight for a “second independence”—a future free from the grip of corruption and economic mismanagement.
Finally, the persistent depreciation of the cedi against major global currencies is a stark reminder that action is needed now to rebuild Ghana.
